Deadman’s Curve

Last Friday was my first day home since my throat surgery, and boy was I ever happy to be in my own home again!  Even though the nurses were all very kind, and did everything they could to make me as comfortable as possible, I still didn’t get much rest during my stay in the hospital.  So when I finally got home, and in my own bed, I fell fast asleep, and had the following dream.

I was driving along a winding road up in the mountains.  Looking ahead I could see a break in the tree line, and that my road was going to intersect with another one along the edge of a lake.  As I neared this intersection, I realized that the lake was at the bottom of a steep canyon, and the road along its edge had no guard rail to keep one from careening over the edge, and down into the lake.

After meeting up with the lake road, I drove along it until I neared a bend in the road that jutted out over the lake.  As I approached the bend, a feeling of despair came over me, and suicidal thoughts came into my mind; I actually saw myself driving my vehicle off the edge of the cliff and into the lake!  Realizing that these feelings were not my own, I pulled my vehicle over to the side of the road, and spent a few moments separating myself from the impressions I was picking up.  “I wonder if someone committed suicide at that very bend in the road?”, I thought to myself.  Deciding to investigate it further, I got out of my vehicle, and looked for a path down to the edge of the lake.  Finding one, I carefully made my way down to the water.

Standing at the edge of the lake I felt a pulling sensation to my right, and found myself walking ankle deep in the water towards an outcropping about 100 feet away.  As I reached the outcropping, I walked down into the water about 3 or four feet, and then looked back towards the way I came, and saw something that nearly stunned me.

Walking towards me were the spirits of dozens of men and women.  They were all walking across the water, looking straight ahead, moving effortlessly across the edge of the lake.  I noticed one man in particular, off to the right, that was dressed in a business suit and a hat.  The rest of the people were a mixture of men and women of all economic classes.

I walked out into the water amongst them, and started calling out to them, trying to get some kind of response. “Who are you?  Why are you here?  Did you commit suicide by driving off that cliff?”, I asked to anyone that would listen.  Finally, a woman stopped, and looked down at me; seemingly surprised that I was there.  Looking into her eyes I asked, “Do you need my help?”.  She nodded ‘yes’, and it was then that I woke up.
