Alarming Number of Bottlenose Dolphins Washing Up On Gulf Coast Shores

From February through the first part of April 2011, at least 406 dead baby bottlenose dolphins have turned up on the shores of the Gulf Coast. Just another sad casualty of the BP Oil Disaster. More …

At least 50 dead birds fall from the sky near Sterling, KS

According to KansasCW.com, “Elizabeth Stange says she saw one or two birds fall from the trees in front of her house, and then about two dozen more followed. It happened around 1:30 Thursday afternoon.

“We walked outside but were scared to go anywhere near the trees because we thought we would be hit by one of the birds.”

Stange said the strangest part was they all died at within minutes of each other. By Thursday evening she and her family had collected about 50 birds from their driveway and yard.

Stange says a local vet told her the birds likely ate something poisonous, but was sending a few to K-State to be looked at closer.

Even if that was the case, the family still says it was strange the birds died at the exact same time.

“This is bazarre, I mean it’s not normal,” said Elizabeth.”

Dead Fish Litter Beach in Alabama

Dead fish are everywhere, littering the beach at Gulf Shores.

According to Fox10TV.com, “Charles Kelly with the Gulf State Pier said they are spadefish and only spadefish. This causes him to worry.

“The thing is it’s the same kind of fish. It’s not a mixture of fish. It’s a spadefish, which looks like an angel fish that goes in the aquarium, they just get much larger,” said Kelly. “There’s just too many of them dying and of the same species that’s very unusual.”

Fish Kill Discovered in Misery Bay

According to GoErie.com, “Two women walking along the north shore of Presque Isle State Park’s Misery Bay reported at about 2 p.m. today what they said were thousands of dead fish.

They also said they saw several dead birds as well as a dead turtle and rabbit.

An official from the state Department of Environmental Protection headed to the area to investigate. Jim Grazio, a Great Lakes biologist with the DEP’s Office of the Great Lakes, said most of the fish were gizzard shad and he believed their death was a natural event caused by a temperature change.

A few other species of fish were also discovered among the dead. In the case of the handful of northern pike, the cause of death could have been stress from spawning, he said.

See Wednesday’s Erie Times-News and GoErie.com for more coverage.”

Hundreds of Dead Fish Found in New York Pond

According to Wetmtv.com, “Town of Southport, N.Y. – Workers from the City of Elmira and the Town of Southport cleaned out Millers Pond.

Dead bass, sunfish and others are being scooped up from the south end of Millers pond.

Southport’s Highway Department and Elmira’s Public Works Department cleaned up hundreds of dead fish with nets and a back hoe.

Both departments worked on the project because the pond is split between both municipalities.”

Dozens of Musk Oxen Found Dead in Alaska

Reuters – “Thirty-two musk oxen were found dead in the ice along the Bering Strait, apparently killed when they drowned in water that surged ashore during a winter storm, the National Park Service said on Tuesday.”

Hundreds of Fish Dead in Cranberry Pond

In Greece, hundreds of fish were found dead in a pond in Greece. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation the cause was “winter kill”. Hmmm … this seems to be happening in more and more places. I wonder why?

Over 100,000 Albatross Chicks Killed by Tsunami

The devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan not only took thousands of human lives, but they also killed over 100,000 chicks near Hawaii. According to CNN.com, “… In the hours after the tsunami waves struck the refuge, officials concentrated on freeing some 300 birds that were either waterlogged or trapped in debris.

After the rescues, biologists turned their attention to surveying the damage, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a statement.

The survey shows that 22% of this year’s albatross hatchlings were lost as a result of the tsunamis and two winter storms that struck the refuge earlier this year.

About 110,000 Layson and black-footed albatross chicks were killed, along with 2,000 adults, officials said.” To read more, click on the image below:

Dead Fish Turn Up in Miller Pond

According to Wetmtv.com, “Elmira, N.Y. — Hundreds of dead fish have floated to the surface in one Elmira pond.

The dead fish on Millers pond were first spotted yesterday.

Officials say the cause of death is winterkill.

The DEC says winterkill happens when ice and snow prevent sunlight from entering the pond.

It prevents aquatic plants from producing oxygen, which kills the fish.

But some neighbors aren’t convinced. Kerri Munley of Parkway Drive says, “To me it’s not something that seems right but with everything happening around the world, we got fish dying and birds dropping out of the sky, who knows what it is.” John Keefe of Hampton Raod says he isn’t worried.

“It’s just a natural process. It’s okay, it happens, that’s all. Just the way the weather is.” And Ruby Adams of Parkway Drive says, “I really believe in my heart that with all these things happening with the fish and the birds, we are living in the last days.”

Elmira and Southport crews will start the clean-up process on Monday.”

According to SeattleWeekly.com, “Wildlife experts say they’ve never seen anything like it. An entire family of beavers turned into roadkill near the corner of 132nd Street Southeast and 35th Avenue Southeast in Mill Creek made the intersection look like it was “strewn with dogs.”

Carp, Buffalo, Bluegill, Crappie and Bass Turnup in Davenport Lagoon

According to Qctimes.com, “The Iowa Department of Natural Resources investigated a fish kill report Friday at Credit Island lagoon in Davenport.

Fisheries staff said an undetermined number of carp, buffalo, bluegill, crappie and bass likely died during the winter from a combination of stress and low oxygen. The fish appear to have been dead for some time, and with the snow and ice gone, the dead fish have blown to shore and are more visible.

Credit Island is a shallow, 10-acre lagoon on the island of the same name in the Mississippi River. The river floods the lagoon almost annually. Winter fish kills at Credit Island lagoon occur every few years, the DNR said.

The DNR said evidence of partial winter fish kills comes in the spring as the ice goes off lakes, ponds and backwaters.”

Neurotoxin Led to Mass Fish Kill in Redondo Beach, CA

According to an article on CNN, the mass die off of sardines and anchovies in Redondo Beach, CA was due to domoic acid, a neurotoxin. It looks like the dumping of waste, pesticides, plastic, and other man-made products into our oceans is starting to take its toll on sea life.

Do They Think We’re Idiots?

The latest explanation for the millions of dead anchovies and sardines in Redondo Beach, CA, was that a predator fish drove them into the harbor. Give me a break! Is that the best they can come up with? Why don’t they try the shifting of Magnetic North by 40 miles per year? That might be a more plausible explanation for why the fish became confused and drove themselves into the cramped space of the harbor! A smaller incident of around 30 dead birds was also reported in Missouri.” and “California and Illinois join countless other states that have seen mass animal deaths in the past weeks. Thousands of dead birds and fish were reported in Arkansas within 100 miles of each other, and then days later hundreds more dead birds turned up 300 miles away in Louisiana. Reports of similar incidents continued, with dead birds turning up Kentucky and millions of dead fish appearing in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay.

The incidents haven’t been isolated to the U.S., as hundreds of dead birds were discovered in Italy, and dozens of birds fell from the sky in Sweden. Massive fish kills were reported in Brazil and New Zealand, while England experienced an estimated 40,000 dead crabs washing onto its beaches.”
