Ghost Box

Most everyone involved in paranormal research has heard of “Frank’s Box”, a piece of equipment that supposedly allows one to communicate with the “other side” real time.  When I heard about this device, I was a bit ambivalent.  On one hand I was intrigued with the idea of being able to communicate with ghosts/spirits/entities real time, but on the other hand I questioned whether or not this was truly possible.  After all, how in the world could a ghost predict what was going to be coming up on the radio dial, word wise, seconds before the sweep found the signal.  And how would they know what I was going to ask, before I asked it, and then force the radio to provide a proper response?  It seemed not only impossible, but crazy that anyone would claim it worked.  Then I heard that people were creating their own version of this device using “hacked” digital AM/FM radios, and getting amazing results.

So, with $29 in hand, I went over to Radio Shack and purchased a 12-469 digital AM/FM radio, and then “hacked” it using instructions I found on YouTube.  Then I did my first radio sweep using my own personal “Frank’s Box”.  And I was amazed!  I actually got real time responses to questions I was asking.  And not just single word responses; but whole sentences immediately after my questions.  Needless to say I was completely floored.

But how is this all possible?  It’s insane!  It doesn’t make one bit of sense.  No person in their right mind would believe that “ghosts” could be communicating with me, or anyone else, using the AM band of a radio during a sweep of the dial.  But it was happening.

Then one afternoon I was listening to a show from Coast to Coast AM that I downloaded from the night before.  It was an interview with Philip Imbrogno, a fellow investigator and University Professor.  Apparently he has been doing his own research into the radio sweep technique, and coming up with some very interesting evidence.   Using the oscilloscope, he was able to find a separate carrier wave on top of the regular AM band, proving that there is indeed something going on with this technique.  For instance, if you listen to my ghost box recordings, or watch my videos of them, pay special attention to what happens immediately prior to response.  There will often be a change in the sound coming from the box, an actual dip in volume, or even a sort of tuning in of the frequency.   In my latest video “Ghost Box Recordings:  Hospital Visitor”, I actually point this out.

  1. Philip Imbrogno! Very interesting, never heard C2C that show. I don’t have the equipment to look for these other carriers on AM, but “they” talk about transmitting something.

I kinda doubt that an extra carrier is always used, maybe that is just for the higher level and clearer voices that come through(?). When I’m testing “they” seem to be ever present, and always talk with no notice.

The swept radio method is more complicated than the deceptively simple appearance of tuning a radio.

BTW, you can sweep manually–by hand, and it works as well as electronic sweep. Bill Murphy(SyFy Fact or Faked) claims he was manually sweeping a radio in the 70s for EVP. As far as I know, a Danish researcher by the name of Stien was doing electronic radio sweep back in the 80s, so this stuff has a history.

You can replace the tuning capacitor in a mechanically tuned radio with varactors to make a “box”. The possiblities for boxes is endless. I want to convert a tube radio this month–for fun.

    • Yes, I have heard about sweeping manually-by-hand. I haven’t tried that particular technique myself, as I wondered if it takes some of the validity of your captures away. Also, even though Mr. Imbrogno found a separate carrier-wave, I still wonder if that is truly the explanation for what is happening. For instance, I’m getting to where I can tell when a message is coming up, just by the way the noise changes before-hand. It’s almost as if “they” are tuning in.

By the way, if this truly is Frank Sumption that left a comment, why is your email address “purplealiengirl”? I find that too funny.

      Take care!
